HBC (Hiawatha Broadband Communications, Inc.) is a Winona-based company that was formed in 1997. HBC evolved as a successor to an innovative not-for-profit education initiative which connected the Winona community’s educational institutions to a fiber-optic network and transformed teaching and learning via the Internet.
Today, HBC helps foster economic advancement in communities throughout Minnesota with world-class fiber-optic technology for television, Internet and telephone services. More than 30% of the stock in HBC is owned by Winona area not-for-profit institutions. Anonymous benefactors purchased the stock for the community’s schools as the new HBC was organized, and it is just one important indicator of HBC’s commitment to “people before profit.”
