The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) has announced artist Stephen Hilyard of Madison, Wisconsin will exhibit his work in the solo exhibition, Seeking the Sublime. The exhibition, the second in the MMAM’s 2015 Underwater Photography Series, will be on display from May 1 – July 15, 2015.

Stephen Hilyard’s artwork is described as a realm of grandeur and natural beauty that is often impossible to put into words. In his Rapture of the Deep series, Hilyard invents captivating, deceptive and surreal compositions which superimpose vintage images of mountaineers with his own underwater photography. These images culminate in large, translucent light boxes which glow in a human-made beauty. In other photographic and video works, Hilyard creates similar images inspired by nature, but upon patient review, appear slightly unnatural due to his masterful digital manipulation.

About Seeking the Sublime, MMAM Executive Director stated, “All great art museums like the MMAM are innovative and meaningful places where the past meets the present. During his solo exhibition, this innovation belongs to Stephen and his beautiful, thoughtful and challenging works or present-day brilliance. This exhibition is not to be missed.”

Hilyard is a professor of Digital Arts at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his work has been exhibited and collected nationwide. The Media Sponsor of Seeking the Sublime is Wisconsin Public Radio.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is located at 800 Riverview Drive in Winona. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Learn more at www.mmam.org.
