The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety reports five motorcyclists have died on Minnesota roads since Wednesday, April 15. Three of the deaths happened Saturday. Four of the five riders were not wearing a helmet.

• On April 15, a 23-year-old motorcyclist died after sideswiping a vehicle while changing lanes on I-35E in Little Canada. He was wearing a helmet.
• On April 16, a 46-year-old man was riding in Lac Qui Parle County on County Road 20 at 341st Avenue when he went into a ditch and overturned. He was not wearing a helmet.
• On April 18, a 37-year-old man was riding with a 38-year-old woman passenger on MN-68 near 519th Avenue in Blue Earth County. The motorcycle collided with another vehicle at an intersection. Both the rider and passenger were killed. They were not wearing helmets.
• On April 18, a 53-year-old man was riding on County Road 7 in Goodhue County when he ran into a culvert. He was not wearing a helmet.

This brings the total motorcycle fatalities this year to six. The first death happened March 15.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety offers these safety tips to motorcyclists and motorists as the motorcycle season continues:

• Watch for motorcycles and always look twice before entering a roadway or changing lanes.
• Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, their speed and distance is more difficult to judge.
• Give riders room and check blind spots. Pay attention and drive at safe speeds.

• Be prepared for inattentive drivers by staying focused on riding and keeping your speed in check.
• Wear the gear. Motorcyclists should wear a DOT-approved helmet and brightly-colored protective gear for visibility and protection.
• Don’t drink and ride. One-third of all motorcycle fatalities involve impaired riders.
• Take a training course. Training is available for novice and experienced riders.
