Mid West Music Fest comes to Winona Thursday

The 6th annual Mid West Music Fest is bringing music to Winona April 23-25. Recently nominated for “Best Music Festival in Minnesota by Twin Cities publication, The City Pages, this year’s festival features over 100 bands, representing dozens of genres, performing at venues all around Winona. Headliners include Charlie Parr, Frankie Lee, Chastity Brown, Communist Daughter, Lucy Michelle, Pieta Brown, Black Market Brass and many more.

On the Saturday, April 25 musician workshops covering various topics, such as; recording, copyrights and publishing, and publicity will be held. New for 2015, MWMF’s Sounds Like School initiative, which aims to connect local students with music and musicians, will feature it’s own stage at Wesley UMC. Performances at the Sounds Like School Stage will be all-ages and will feature kid-friendly acts such as Koo Koo Kanga Roo, a puppet show by Dr. Bob, and an instrument petting zoo, as well as featuring area high school artists. Headlining the Sounds Like School Stage will be Toki Wright & Big Cats and Bad Bad Hats.

Unique to 2015 with be a sneak peak of Emmy award winning musician Jack Norton’s documentary film Jug Band Hokum. This film follows the whimsical lives of three jug bands as they prepare to compete in a Battle of the Jug Bands Contest. The preview will be followed by a performance from Bones, Jugs and Harmony, one of the bands featured in the film.

A Songwriter’s Showcase will be coming to MWMF. Nine regional songwriters will perform at the Winona Arts Center. After a day of workshopping and networking, evening performances will include three new songs created by paired-up songwriters during their day of songwriting at the festival. Scheduled to perform are Frankie Lee, Christopher the Conquered, Nicole Rae (The Traveling Suitcase), Lydia Liza (Bomba de Luz), Mike Munson, Jaybone Bell, J.E. Sunde, Rachael Kilgour, and Eddie Danger.
