JUNE 2004 NEWSLETTER

CANDI KOHNER

The Fellowship and Evangelism Committee is hosting a day on the State Capitol Grounds for the Twin
Cities Festival with Luis Palau, an Evangelist, on August 7, 2004. They are working very hard to bring you
the opportunity to attend a dynamic festival which includes activities for all ages.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Luis Palau embraced the new millennium (and coatemporaiy life as we
know it today), long before it arrived.. His festival evangelism ministry, traveling to numerous cities and countries
each year, has all the best elements of today's most popular music festivals (everything from hot contemporary-
music acts and exotic food stands to a full-blown, stand-alone extreme sports skate park).
What makes Luis Palau's ministry so effective is its non-traditional and "open arms" approach. Each
year, Palau stages four to six major festivals in the U.S. and abroad. These world-class, full multi-media
productions feature the biggest names in Christian music. In addition, Palau erects a complete 10,000 square-foot
skate park in each city featuring extreme sports celebrities from professional skateboarding and BNX
bike riding. For children, there a tie-in with Veggie Tales, one the most popular family video franchises in history.
For more information you can go online at  (www.palau.org/twincities/about.php)
This promises to be a fun and inspirational day. Invite your friends.
Yours in Christ.

DOUG ROSENDAHL
Last month this column discussed the idea that knowing and functioning by using the gifts God has given
you is at the heart of the local church. This month: What are those gifts that
are used to build up the body of Christ at Grace Presbyterian Church?  The Bible mentions three basic categories
of gifts: office gifts (Eph. 4:8, II, 12), serving gifts (Rom. 12:6-8), and charismatic gifts (I Cor. 12:4, 8-11).
Office gifts are those that equip God's people to do the work of ministry.  The Greek word translated as
equipping in Eph. 4:12 is from the verb meaning "to mend". The same word is used where James and John were
"mending" their nets. Mending the saints and equipping them are not only done by the pastors but by everyone
in the congregation since we are all ministers. That's how churches grow! When the people are being
consistently mended and equipped by the word of God so that the work of the ministry is being done,
churches become vibrant and healthy.
Serving gifts are distributed among Christians to equip us to excel in serving. We must discover,
develop, and deploy these gifts if they are to be of any use. Each of us must take the responsibility
for the usage of our gifts. Along with these special gifts, God gives to each us certain passions, areas of service
that motivate us more than others. Link your gifts with your passion experience the joy of maximum
effectiveness with a minimum weariness.
The last group of gifts are the Charismatic gifts. Check out I C 12:4,8-11. Let me know what you
think about these. See you in church.

AL  KLEINSASSER
Dear Friends at Grace,

In my column this month, I first want to give you some current information and then continue my
story as in previous months.
We have two special family events happening over Memorial Weekend and the first weekend in
June. On May 29, my step-daughter Andrea will be -marrying Brian whom she became friends with
back in Jr. High. They both graduated from UMD within this past year and will be married at
Woodbury Baptist Church. They asked me to officiate at their wedding.  Alicia, my youngest
stepdaughter, will be graduating from Woodbury HS on June 6. We are hosting a graduation party for her
on Friday evening. June 4. I left off my story having spent two years in the USMC stationed
at an air station in S. Calif. It was while working in a squadron office as an admin/personnel clerk, I came
across an order that under certain circumstances allowed Marines an early out from their enlistment. So
I decided to apply for this and see what would happen. I had become aware of a two month Practical
Missionary Training Course (PMT) in Central America which would involve the same time frame as my
last two months of active service time.
I requested an early out for PMT through the base chapel program, and after going through the
chain-of-command to the Commandant of the MC; it came back that the MC would allow me an early
release date of July 15th "for own convenience" one day before I would need to be in El Paso, TX to
leave by train for Mexico City. Later that same day I was on my way to El Paso by plane.
Instead of spending my last two months as a typist in an MC office.. I spent the same time frame in
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador. and Honduras getting exposure to all kinds of mission situations
in eluding two weeks at Wycliffe Bible Translator's remote Jungle Camp in southern Mexico. Here
we lived in mud huts and slept in jungle hammocks on treks into the jungle visiting local indigenous
people. It was a very unique time of learning and being exposed to a variety of cultures. I even had the
opportunity to fly by Missionary Aviation to a Chiristian school high in the mountains of Guatemala
where part of my experience was eating tortillas and black beans for three meals a day. Talk about
"Montezurna's Revenge"! (Let' s not!) God works in mysterious and marvelous ways.
His wonders to perform.
Blessings!

M&M
Pentecost Offering

This offering was officially taken on May 30.  Those who would like to contribute but could not on the
30th may still give by getting your gift to the church as soon as possible. 40% of the offering will go to
the Women's' Resource Center Garden Project for children at risk. We contributed to this program last
year and found it was a very successful activity. The purpose of the offering nation wide is to help
children, youth and young people at risk
This is one of many special offerings at Grace and every one is encouraged to contribute to the
special causes they want to support. No one is expected to give to every cause.
Thank you for your support throughout the year. The mission giving at Grace is outstanding.

UPDATE ON MISSION PROJECT

On Sunday, May 16 during their opening, the Sunday School presented Greg Moser with a check of S60.14 for Rod
Solid, the Christian Youth Mission located on 3th Street in Winona. This organization reaches youth not only in
Winona but in many surrounding communities. Greg explained how Rock Solid is used for many groups. We are
thankful we could give our first-Sunday-of-the-month offering to Rock Solid.

CLERK'S CORNER
Mary Lowery Clerk of Session

Hello Everybody! May was truly a month of JOY for us. Our son, Jon Lowery, was married to Angela
Sweeny on May 21st. We had a good time getting ready and celebrating the marriage ceremony. Relatives and
friends came from as far away as California and the state of Washington. Everyone made it safely and we
rejoiced in that. We invited God to be with us and I'm sure He was there!
Speaking of celebrating, we have much to be thankful for here at Grace. The month of April was busy
for all your session members. Have you noticed the following: The new slirubs out in front facing Broadway
the new microphone system (isn't it great), and the new TV's. DVD players, and the new stands to put the Tv's
on? It's a JOY to be able to have these very helpful items. Session voted to approve the purchase of these.
Session also approved the summer worship hours. Our new summer time is from 10:00 am-l0:45am
beginning May 30. Tlus will continue through September 5th. The exceptions are July 18 (picnic at Farmer
Park with Baptists) and August 8 (jazz picnic with Baptists and First Congregational).
Session will continue to work for you during the summer with your and God's help.

Fellowship and Evangelism Luis Pala

The Fellowship and Evangelism Committee is hosting a day on the State Capitol Grounds for the
Twin Cities Festival with Luis Palau, an Evangelist, on August 7,2004.
More than four decades after arriving in America from his native Argentina, Luis Palau has followed
his calling: to spread the powerful word of God. Whether on stage speaking to a crowd of half a
million people or in a White house meeting with national political and clergy leaders, Luis Palau
consistently remains one of America's most effective and compelling spiritual communicators.
The festivals are always free and never collect a financial offering from the massive crowds. Though
these elements help draw the masses and provide a constant source of entertainment, Palau never loses
sight of his ministry's ultimate goal: to show people how the Good News of Jesus Christ can bring peace
and fulfillment.
The following is a tentative schedule: Our day will consist of riding a coach bus to St. Paul leaving,
Winona at 10:00 a.m. We will arrive at Al and Linda's house for a BBQ at approximately 12:15
p.m. and will remain there until 2:30 p.m. We will be bused to the Festival arriving at approximately
3:00 p.m. We will return to Winona at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the message given by
Luis Palau. We will arrive in Winona at 10:30 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet on the liall bulletin board.
We will need a minimum of 30 people or the bus will be cancelled. The only cost will be for the bus
which will be 30 - 31 people - $16.00 each; 32-34people - $15.00 each; 35 - 37 people - $14.00
each ; 38 - 39 people - $13.00 each; 40 - 42 people $12.00; 43 - 45 people $11.00 46 or more $10.00
each.
