Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?
-Martin Luther King, Jr.-
On May 21, 2006 Elayne Haedtke will be celebrating her 80 birthday. Because of this mile mark in her life, I also want
to bring to everyone's attention that she has been our church secretary for 36 years! Elayne began as secretary when Jerry
Benjamin was our Pastor. For those of you who have been longtime members, it puts into perspective just how long
Elayne had been a dedicated employee of this church. For those of you who have not been here that long, she has worked
for GPC since December, 1969. As a staff member, I can understand the commitment that Elayne has to this church. Over
the years, Elayne has given countless hours in her position as secretary without pay or acknowledgement in addition to the
volunteer hours she serves as a member.
Al, Doug and I all consider Elayne a vital part of the church staff and each of us feel very privileged to work with her. It
has been a joy for all of us. As team members, we all understand the dedication she has had to this church and continues to
have.
Since I have been Administrator, I have tried to support and encourage our members for their time and dedication to this
church through a simple "thank you". I know appreciation is a good thing! May is a special month for Elayne.  I hope as
members of this church we can all show our gratitude through a simple "Happy Birthday" or "Thank You".
Do not neglect to do good. Hebrews 13:16
Happy Birthday Elayne!

GRACE CHURCH VALUES PART VI

This month we are highlighting the sixth and final value in our church's core values.
Value 6: We believe that each of us is called to share our faith and to demonstrate God's love through the
love and care we give to others, both within our church body and beyond.
Questions: What actions does this value demand of us?
How do we show love and care within our church body? Are there people within our church body who could use a
little more love and care?  (e.g. shut-ins or young families?) Are there things that we do, perhaps because

most  of us have been a "family" for so long, that may be hurtful to others, even to those we care about? (backbiting.
criticizing, under-appreciating?) How do we demonstrate God's love outside of our church walls? Do we need to
actively support groups combating such things as cancer AIDS, racism, sexism, and domestic violence? Do we need ;
reach out to individuals, as well as to groups? How is the love that we show different from the care shown by secular
organizations? Does "sharing our faith" mean "showing" or "telling" or both? Are we able to articulate that we are
motivated by God's love for us, or that Jesus' death and resurrection offers hope and forgiveness to those who are
struggling?

Discovery Club/ Bible Study/ Youth Group
This summer, beginning Wednesday, June 14, Discovery Club, an adult Bible study, and a youth group will meet starting with a supper at 5:00 p.m.  The activities will all end by 7:00 p.m.  Discovery club is for children ages 5 - grade 5 from First Baptist and Grace Church.  The Adult Bible study will be titled , Chasing Daylight, a series of ten sessions by Erwin Raphael McManus.  It helps us learn to seize the power of every moment in our lives.
The youth group is for youth in grades six through twelve.

Vacation Bible School
Holy Land Adventure with five days in Bethlehem Village is the exciting VBS for First Baptist and Grace Presbyterian Churches.  The dates are Sunday, June 4 - Thursday, June 8, from 6:00 - 7:45 p.m.

Children will become a member of a Tribe is Israel where they discover meaningful traditions and rituals and share the Bible Point for the day.  Tribes will visit the Marketplace, the Census Taker, the Village Playground and more.  There will be some commotion as the daily drama unfolds, making it feel like you're really in Bethlehem.  Each day begins and closes with music, singing and dancing.

Please sign up on the sheet in the fellowship hall by May 5.  Children ages 5 - completed grade 5 are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.  This year there will be a $6 fee per child due to the cost of materials.

The Woodman Project
A special project will take place on Saturday May 6 this year which will provide funds for the landscaping of our church lawn.  This project will be done by youth from our church along with the corporation committee.  If you would like to help on that day, please contact a member of the corporation committee.

Recipes! We want your recipes!
Fundraising is asking all of you to look through your recipes and send as many as you are willing to be submitted
in a new GPC cookbook. Please drop them off with Elayne at the church office or send them by e-mail to Jennifer
at winonamacaskills(S).vahoo.com. Please let us know who they are from. Recipes from family and friends are
welcome as well! We don't have a definite deadline yet, but the sooner the better.

PW SPRING GATHERING
Due to a very busy month of May at Grace Church, PW Spring Gathering scheduled for May
13" has been cancelled.. We will try to reschedule something for the fall.
Spring PW Presbytery Meeting was a big success because of the awesome women at Grace.
Thank you to all who helped.

Circle I will not meet in May. Our next meeting will be September 21" at Jane Dietrich's.
Circle II will meet on Wed. May 10 at 1:30 pm at church. Dorothy will provide refreshments. The Bible study
will be the first lesson in "For Everything, A Season" from the Horizon Bible Study.

Mission Trip Update
We continue to plan for the youth mission trip to the
Leech Lake Reservation, near Cass Lake, Minnesota.
Our dates there are June 25-30. At this point we only
need to fund-raise about $23 more. (If you have a
small job that you would like a couple of youth to
help you with, this might be a good time to consider
that!) Our final payment to Youthworks will be
mailed in less than a month.
Youthworks has sent us a nice packet of materials to
help us prepare for the trip, including a five-session
Bible study. We will try to do the Bible study the
week of June 4, in the evening right after VBS.
Our work at Leech Lake will include both home
repairs and a vacation Bible study, or day care type
program. We will take turns with the other groups
there preparing our own food. And there will be
daily devotions, both as a large group, and within our
church group. There will be time each day to enjoy
the local area and learn about the Ojibwe culture.
One night they will have a pow wow for us. That
should be a great experience!
The only glitch in the whole plan is that we need
chapel-ones! We are especially in need of a male
chaperone. Youthworks requires that we provide our
own chaperones, and we do need to send both a male
and a female. Is God calling you? Or is there
someone you know who gets along great with youth
and who would love to serve in this way? The Cass
Lake area should be delightful in late June! Let
Kathy W. know if you have suesestions!

We're Having A GARAGE SALE!
On May 13, from 8:00a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the youth of Grace Presbyterian Church will be holding a garage
sale at the church. Now is the time to do your spring cleaning and donate items for the sale. The proceeds
from the sale will benefit the Ministry of Hope Organization, whose mission is to support orphaned
children in Malawi, Africa. Most of these children are parentless due to the AIDS epidemic in the area.
Ministry of Hope offers food, education, and evangelism to these children.
Please bring items to Grace Presbyterian Church no later than May 12, so that they may be priced and
sorted. Adult clothing will not be accepted, but children's clothing is welcomed. If you need assistance
transporting any items to church, or have any other questions about the sale, please call Janet Nustad at
454-2452. Hope to see you on May 13.
