OCTOBER 2004 NEWSLETTER
Bike outing at Trempealeau Wildlife Area 10/16/2004    1st Fall Sunday School kick ball 9/12/2004

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. "—Hebrews 10:24
Dear Grace Family,
The statement has been made at one time or another: "If you can t beat them, join them. "
During the Middle Ages and especially during the times of the Crusades (which lasted several
hundred years), this statement became more like: "If they don't join us, we '11 beat them. " That about sums up
what happened, the Christians (so called) tried to beat others into becoming Christians through warfare. Not
what you would call "spurring) one another on toward love and good deeds. "
Since many adults during that age seemed to have lost touch with this command from scripture, a very adverse
impact was left on the younger generation in Europe. In fact, there were a number of Children's Crusades that
came about as a result of the modeling of adult crusades.
One of these happened in the Spring of 1212, and was led by a German youth known by the name of Nicholas
and originated in the city of Cologne in northern Germany. Nicholas announced that God had commissioned
him to lead a crusade of children to the Holy Land. Priests as well as laity condemned him, but his idea spread
like wildfire thorugh out the land and soon he gathered together a large following. Parents struggled to restrain
their children, but thousands of boys (and some girls dressed up like boys), averaging in age from 12-18 years
old, joined ranks to head to Jerusalem. It is estimated that about 30,000 children joined this crusade.
These children crossed over the Alps Mountains into Italy. Many died of hunger or were eaten by wolves
along the way, but a remnant did arrive in Genoa, Italy. Here they hoped to find ships to take them on to the
Holy Land, but they weren't able to find any willing takers. So they decided to disband with very few ever
making it back to their homeland.
Most would probably all agree that this was a pretty extreme case and ended up with tragic results. None the-
less, it is an example of what can happen when adults fail to take their Biblical responsibility seriously -  -
children may rise up and try to do it themselves.
One of the ever present dangers in the Christian life is to become passive in our relationship with God, failing
to encourage others in their spiritual journey with God. This doesn't necessarily happen all at once, it happens
as we choose to get into a drift mode. How do we counteract that?
Hebrews 10:24 would instruct us to be continually at the task of spurring each other on in our spiritual lives.
We need interaction with God through daily times of spiritual renewal as well as constantly encouraging each
other through personal contact and coming together for regular worship and prayer.
Please reflect on your role in this. Are you in a drift mode or in the process of encouraging others?
Keep sharpening your spurs,
Al

BOO
(Book of Order)
Every month a topic of concern to
our church will be addressed in this
column. The topics will come from
questions you may have about the
church, the session, or what goes on
in church.
The question/topic this month is:
Form of Government
Preliminary Principles
G-I.OII
1. Head of the Church
(Continued from last month)
b. Christ calls the Church into be, giving it all that is necessary
for its mission to the world, for its building up, and for its service to
God. Christ is present with the Church in both Spirit and the Word.
It belongs to Christ alone to rule, to teach, to call, and to use the Church
as he wills, exercising his authority by the ministry of women and men
for the establishment and extension of his Kingdom.
c. Christ gives to his Church its faith and life, its unity and mission, its
officers and ordinances. Insofar as Christ's will for the Church is set
forth in Scripture, it is to be obeyed. In the worship and service of God
and the government of the church, matters are to be ordered according
to the Word by reason and sound judgment, under the guidance of the
Holy Spirit.

COMMITTEE ON PREPARATION
OF MINISTRY
In November I will be fulfilling my third year term as a member of the Committee on the
Preparation of Ministry (CPM). This committee follows those who wish to become an
ordained minister from the beginning of school until ordination. We interview, question and
encourage students in the process of becoming ordained.
For me, being on the committee has been a fascinating glimpse of not only those
questioning souls who feel a special call, but also the very special requirements of the Presbyterian-
Church to become ordained. I have been surprised at the many different back-
grounds, ages and approaches to the Word by the candidates. How a person grows and
changes from a freshman in seminary to a senior ready to preach a sermon for this committee-
is mind-boggling. Being a member of this committee has deepened my awareness of
how the Holy Spirit works within us. If you are interested in learning more
about the whole ordination process you might want to consider becoming a member of the
CPM. You will definitely meet some great folks. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to
talk to you. - Janet Nustad

know that Kathy Weiner worked and got stung
by a bee and Janet Nustad got a bruise while
carrying windows. Walt Gilbertson was busy
climbing ladders and working on various jobs.
Now who else? Please let us know.
Food for 2 shifts was provided and delivered
to the workers by our ladies: Candi Kohner,
Jean Hayes, Elayne Haedtke, Kathy Weiner,
Ellie Griesel, Dorothy Gilbertson and Thelma
Wieser.
Thank you for your help.
