G-6.000 THE CHURCH AND ITS OFFICERS
G-6.0301 Elders
As there were in Old Testament times, elders for the
government of the people, so the New Testament Church
provided persons with particular gifts to share in
governing and ministry!
Elders are chosen by the people. Together with ministers
of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership,
government, and discipline and have responsibilities for
the life of a particular church as well as the church at
large, including ecumenical relationships. They shall
serve faithfully as members of the session. They shall
serve faithfully as members of the session. (G-10.0102)
When elected commissioners to higher governing bodies,
elders participate and vote with the same authority as
ministers of the Word and Sacrament, and they are
eligible for any office.
Elders should be persons of faith, dedication and good
judgment. Their manner of life should be a
demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the
church and in the world. <G-6 01061
"Farm Beginnings" is a program of the Lewiston-based Land Stewardship
Program that trains new and existing
farmers in sustainable agriculture or farming that seeks to make a
minimal impact on the environment.
The program has classes that teach financial planning, goal setting
and niche marketing. About 60% of the graduates
from the program are already farming.
Classes have a financial cost. Scholarships are available for those
who need Financial help.
The Mission and Stewardship Committee and Session felt that the program
is very worthwhile and meets the criteria of
our Value #5 "We believe that we are called to be caretakers of God's
creation with responsibility of respecting and
nurturing all that God has created".
Grace Church donated $600 for 3scholarships of $200 each. We were informed
that there were matching funds that
raised our gift to $1200.
There is a partial set of Tupperware Flatouts in the church
office. These have not yet been claimed by whoever
ordered them. If you know who ordered them, please
claim them in the office!
Thanks to the lawn mowers and the painters
at church, things are looking great! Thanks
to Candi Kohner for coordinating the clean-
up and rental of the manse and thanks to
Dan Barr for Staining the manse Deck.

Special offering Sunday September 9, 2007
for
International Health Partners-Tanzania
Medical Mission February, 2008
Jean Hayes is part of a 20-25-member medical team from Winona that
will go to Tanzania in February, 2008. The
physicians, surgeons, nurses, laboratory technician, and building workers
will serve for 10 days at the Nyakato Clinic
and hospital that is run by International Health Partners - US &
Tanzania in the north-central city of Mwanza. The team
expects to diagnose and treat 2,000-3,000 thousand patients.
The team is being organized by Fred Weike, RN, at Central Lutheran Church
in Winona and one of its former members,
Mary Ellen Kitundu, RN, who is now working in Tanzania. The team must
bring its own supplies, medications, and
equipment needed to provide medical care. Central Lutheran has worked
on raising funds for some 3 years and the
church is close to reaching its goal of $10,000. But when that goal
was set, the organizers did not know about some
expenses (such as work permits and travel between dispensaries; gasoline
is 16/gallon) and it did not include a budget
for emergencies. Team members are paying their own air fare, food,
and lodging.
Tanzania is just south of Kenya on the East side of Africa. The medical
team from Winona will be working in Mwanza,
Tanzania's second largest city, not far from the Kenyan border and
the southern shore of Lake Victoria.
Mwanza has a high maternal mortality rate and International Health Partners
— US &Tamama (&n organization with
roots in Circle Pines, Minnesota) is building a hospital/birthing center.
It also runs an orphanage and Wisdom Center
where older adults mentor the children. The Winona medical team's work
will be based in one of the three dispensaries
the Nyakato Clinic, where Paula and Denny Lofstrom are the administrators.
International Health Partners also has ongoing work in other cities.
In Dodoma, it runs a women's center and supports
the nursing department of St John's University. The University, established
in 1999, hopes to admit its first nursing
students within the year. In Dar es Salaan-Bagarnoyo, it is planning
a pediatric HIV-AIDS hospital.
PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE
Representatives from PDA will be in Winona to assess damage and see
what help can be provided. Keep tuned for
further news about ways to help. This is the group that we help support
through our giving to One Great Hour of Sharing
and is the group that Walt Gilbertson worked with when he went to Mississippi
to help after the disaster of Katrina.
We are considering a SPECIAL OFFERING to be used for disaster relief.
Money collected will be matched from
Mission Funds. More information will be coming soon.
LOCAL DISASTER RELIEF
The Winona County Emergency Operation Center is working to match those
who want to help in the clean up operations
with those who need help. Any individuals or groups that wish to volunteer
may sign up on a list on the bulletin board at
church or call 457-8882.
Donations of cash, boots (rubber preferred), cleaning supplies and
toiletries will be accepted at the old Underdahl
Toyota, 121 Huff St., Winona. No clothing is being accepted at this
time.
