This week conduit boring crews will be finishing work in PON A and installing the final pedestals clearing the way for fiber to be pulled. Soon we will begin to bury fiber-optic lines (“drops”) to homes in PON A to those who have requested a drop be buried to their home prior to receiving HBC services. If you are interested in receiving HBC services, but have not yet requested your drop pre-bury, you can find the form here.

In PON B, splicing has been completed and testing is expected to be finished this week. It is anticipated services to this area will be available around mid-September.

We have seen some delays in utility locates in PON C, but expectations are for underground utility locations to be flagged yet this week. Conduit boring in PON C can begin once that work is completed.

PON E will be the next area of construction. Utility locates are expected to begin after Labor Day.

Progress was slowed in PON A by a shortage of available utility locators. Current progress models have conduit boring being completed in the next 7 to 10 days. The placement of service pedestals and vaults is expected to continue in PON A for the next two weeks in preparation for pulling fiber-optic cable. Once boring is finished in PON A, crews will immediately begin working in PON C.

All fiber has been pulled in PON B. Testing of fiber signal strength began Monday morning and is expected to be completed by the end of this week. Lawn restoration crews continue their work in PON B, hydro-seeding lawn areas disturbed by construction. We have started to bury fiber-optic lines (“drops”) to homes in PON B that have requested a drop be buried to their home prior to receiving HBC services. If you are interested in receiving HBC services, but have not yet requested your drop pre-bury, you can find the form here.

A right-of-way discrepancy has delayed the placement of the main service cabinet. This cabinet will serve as the connection point between new construction areas and the existing HBC fiber-optic network. Approval has now been given for placement of the cabinet and this work will begin over the next few days.

PON A Construction Progress

PON A Construction Progress

Significant progress has been made in both PON A and PON B!

Conduit boring in PON A is 50% complete and expectations are to have all conduit in place by the end of next week.

In PON B, fiber splicing has begun. The current timeline calls for all splicing and testing to be completed over the next two weeks.

Recent rains have softened lawns resulting in additional yard damage caused by the drilling rigs. Our contractor is acting to mitigate those instances and perform lawn restoration work.

This week, boring will continue in PON A along Tierney Drive. Fiber is being pulled in PON B and crews will begin splicing in preparation for connecting PON B to the network.

Many are asking about the lawn restoration process to repair the areas that were damaged during boring. There are two phases to this process.

Within two weeks of completing a section, a crew will do an initial restoration of the lawn damage. This includes covering the damaged area with black dirt and seeding. Due to the drier conditions, we hope that all homeowners would assist in keeping the seed watered to ensure germination.

The second phase will occur in the fall (September or October depending on the weather), when crews will evaluate previously seeded areas. Any areas found where seed germination was not successful, additional seed will be sowed giving the highest success rate for germination in the spring.

PON A and B Progress Map

PON A and B Progress Map

Work has now begun in PON A. On Monday, crews began boring along Tierney Drive and will proceed westward towards Erickson Drive this week. Our contractor will have two boring drills in operation for the next several days and we are expecting work in PON A to progress quickly! Locators continue to flag underground utilities ahead of construction crews.

In PON B, conduit boring has been completed and the final vaults and pedestals are being installed prior to pulling the fiber-optic cable through the conduit. This will begin later this week. Once the fiber-optic cable is in place, crews will begin splicing the PON B fiber to the main network. Barring any delays, this work could be completed as soon as the first week of August.

Lawn restoration work will continue throughout the week in PON B.

Crews will be boring conduit along Todd Way and Todd Court this week. This is the final section to complete and will conclude boring operations in PON B. There are several pedestals and vaults that need to be installed and that work will continue for the next week as well.

An unexpected delay in the delivery of a fiber splicing cabinet has caused a minor setback to our completion timeline. Once the cabinet has been installed, fiber will be pulled through the conduit. We are hopeful services will be available in PON B by mid-August.

Once boring is completed in PON B, work will begin immediately in the next area for construction, PON A. Residents in this area should begin seeing utility locators flagging in the street right of way in the coming days.

July Construction Progress

July Chatfield PON B Construction Progress

Steady progress continues to be made each week, despite running into some more areas of rock, 2,009 feet of conduit is now in place. Our contractor estimates that nearly three-quarters of PON B (the first section to be constructed) has the necessary conduit in place! This week construction will be focused on Brittany Road, Tierney Drive, and Tierney Court over to Todd Way.

As construction progresses, more locator flags will be placed in preparation for the last push of construction in PON B. Contractors will also be focusing on lawn restoration work in areas where construction has been completed. This will include placing dirt and grass seed in the areas where yards were disrupted during construction. These areas will be monitored to ensure the grass is germinating properly.

The current timeline has all conduit being placed by mid-July, at which time the pulling and splicing of the fiber-optic cable will begin. Provided there are no delays, residents of PON B could be able to receive services in early August!

Pedestal being staged for installation.

Pedestal being staged for installation.

Construction progress was slowed last week as crews ran into areas of rock, but they still managed to bury 1,800 feet of conduit. To date nearly 26,500 feet of conduit has been placed.

Boring operations have been completed on Honeysuckle Lane, Blueberry Lane, and Blueberry Court, and along Pleasant Drive between 12th Street W. and 15th Street W. Boring is also finished on 12th Street W. from Honeysuckle Lane west to Christa McAuliffe Elementary School and a short section of 14th Street W. just west of Honeysuckle Lane.

This week, construction will be focused along 14th Street W. to Pleasant Drive and from Brittany Road to Tiereny Court. Crews will also continue to install peds and vaults in areas where conduit has already been buried so they can begin pulling fiber cable through the conduit. Lawn restoration work is underway in those areas where construction has been completed.

Construction Crews

Construction workers use a soil compactor to prepare the site of a pedestal installation for lawn restoration.

Good progress was made as construction crews were able to bore and bury several thousand feet of conduit and place multiple vaults and pedestals last week.

Boring operations continued along 12th Street W. towards Christa McAuliffe Elementary School with another 2,700 feet of conduit now in place! On Honeysuckle Lane, boring has been completed, conduit has been placed, and vaults and pedestals are beginning to be installed in preparation for the pulling of fiber.

We are also making progress on our new Hastings office location! The local HBC Hastings office will be located at 1775 Market Blvd. It’s been exciting as furniture begins to arrive and the office layout begins to take shape. The office is scheduled to open on July 1st!

Construction has started and crews have made good progress last week! Around 2000 feet of conduit has been put in place along Honeysuckle Lane from 14th St. W to 12th St. W. This week, construction efforts focused on boring operations on 12th St. W. from Honeysuckle Lane up to Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.

Vault placementCrews have also been burying vaults and placing pedestals as the next steps before fiber-optic cable is pulled through conduit and splicing operations begin. The photo shows construction crews burying an underground fiber vault along Honeysuckle Lane.

We’ll have another project update next week!

Utility locates have been completed! While we had hopes of beginning construction today, May 27th, the rain has pushed the start of construction to Tuesday, June 1st.  The first area to be built is roughly bordered by South Frontage Road, Pleasant Drive, 15th Street West and Todd Way (yellow area in the image).

The construction process involves boring a pathway underground where a conduit will be placed.  Fiber-optic cable will be put inside the conduit to protect the fiber cabling from moisture which would otherwise be damaged over time. Boring is more efficient and less disruptive than digging a trench to bury conduit.

While work will be done within the street right-of-way, boring may cause minor damage to landscaping in the area where the bore bit enters the ground and where it exits.  Our crew will take the time to repair this damage upon completion of the project.

Hastings, MN – Hiawatha Broadband Communications, Inc. (HBC) has announced plans to begin building a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Hastings, MN that will be capable of delivering speeds of 5 Gigabit. Officials at HBC said they hope to begin construction on a main fiber trunk line as early as mid-April.

HBC currently has a presence in Hastings, providing high-speed Internet to local industry. HBC president Dan Pecarina said the company will be expanding its footprint to include residential customers.

“We are really excited to be able to bring our high-speed broadband service to the residents of Hastings,” Pecarina said. “The FTTH network we’ll be building will employ the latest technology allowing for speeds up to 5 Gigabits. We believe allowing customers to have access to higher symmetrical speeds is crucial because the way we work, learn, and watch television continues to evolve.”

According to HBC Director of Technical Operations, Michael Barker, the project will begin by constructing a transport route on 15th Street from Pine Street west to General Sieben Drive. He said residents should expect to see contractors working in that area relatively soon.

“Residents should start seeing our people begin to mark underground utilities like communications lines, gas, water, and sewer, that are located in the city right-of-way,” said Barker. “We are hoping to begin constructing the transport route by the middle of April, providing we aren’t delayed by weather.”

Barker said once the trunk line is constructed, HBC will start building the fiber network. He said the first area to be built will in the area north of 15th Street W., east of Tierney Park.  Barker estimates that construction will begin sometime in late April or early May.

According to Pecarina, HBC will also have a local Customer Care office in Hastings.

“We have secured an office space located in the Hastings Marketplace,” said Pecarina. “Our hope is to have the office ready to open in June.”
