According to the Federal Trade Commission as many as 10 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. The crime takes many forms. Identity thieves may rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish a telephone account in your name.
Some tips to keep your information secure:

- Treat your personal information like cash.
- Check out companies to find out who you are dealing with.
- Give personal information over encrypted websites only.
- Protect passwords.
- Back up your files.
