Chiefs walk-off Zumbrota

Travis Hengel drew a bases loaded walk to give the Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team a ten-inning, come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Zumbrota in Twin Rivers League action at Gabrych Park on Wednesday.

Ryan Meyers started the game with three scoreless innings of work to go along with three strikeouts before the Tigers got to him with four runs in the fourth which began with an A.J. Yusten base hit. Zumbrota added two more in the fifth on a Eric Swiggum home run to right-center field and held a 6-2 advantage into the bottom of that frame.

The Chiefs answered back with three runs of their own thanks to a Scott Malotka two-run single and a Brandon Beech knock with the bases loaded to get within one run, and tied it in the sixth on a solo homer to right from player / manager Brett Schmit.

After three frames without a run from either side, it went to bonus baseball, but in the tenth, the Chiefs loaded the bases on a Zach Benson single and pair of walks from Schmit and Pat Jacobsen, and following a pair of punchouts by Swiggum, won it on Hengel’s free pass.

Jesse Van Brunt earned the win on the strength of 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Winona.
