Chiefs hand Pine Island first Twin Rivers loss
Five different players drove in runs as the Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team defeated Pine Island 7-2 in Twin Rivers League action at Gabrych Park on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers (4-8, 3-1) jumped out in front on a Nic Enerson run-scoring double off of Jesse Van Brunt in the second inning, but did not cross home plate again until the seventh.
In the Winona (5-1, 5-1) half of the second, the Chiefs knotted the game on a Travis Hengel RBI single and took a lead they would not relinquish on a Zach Nelson fielder’s choice that scored Scott Malotka. The Chiefs tallied two more in the sixth and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Van Brunt logged seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out five against just one walk, but did hit three batters.
Hengel and Nelson both knocked in two, while Hunter Kruse, Zach Benson and Brett Schmit each drove in one apiece.
You can see the game in its entirety on the Extra Point replay both today and Friday at noon on HBC TV 25.
