Chiefs survive Wanamingo

The Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team stranded Wanamingo base-runners in all nine innings and turned away rallies in which the Jacks had the potential lead-run at the plate in each of the final two frames to escape with a 4-2 Twin Rivers League win at Gabrych Park on Wednesday.

Ryan Meyers logged five innings of shutout ball, racking up five strikeouts in a victory, giving want to Hunter Gamoke in the sixth, and despite seven walks over 2 1/3 innings, Winona held a two-run advantage into the eighth and ninth.

The Jacks scored each of their two runs in the eighth, then loaded the bases with two outs only to have their opportunity to surge ahead snatched away on a Brandon Beech diving catch to end the inning and preserve the Chiefs’ two-run advantage. Jesse Van Brunt picked up the final two outs for the save in the ninth.

Winona scored its first run on a Travis Hengel base hit in the first and added two more on a Garrett Block single in the third, while Beech went 2-for-4 with a run, Scott Malotka finished 2-for-2 with a walk and Owen Burnikel went 1-for-2 with a walk and hit by pitch.
