Chiefs move on in Twin Rivers League playoffs

Brett Schmit and Travis Hengel delivered run-scoring singles in the first and Jesse Van Brunt struck out seven to the lead the Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Zumbrota in the second round of the Twin Rivers League playoffs at Gabrych Park on Wednesday.

The Chiefs had earned a first-round bye at the fourth seed, and earned the hat trick with their third victory over Zumbrota on the season. The Tigers had thoroughly throttled Plainview-Elgin-Millville by a total score of 47-5 in a best-of-three first round series.

Hunter Kruse returned to Winona’s line-up after having spent some time in the Arizona Wood Bat League, and went 1-for-5 in the clean-up spot. Brandon Beeach and Zach Nelson added RBI singles and Hunter Gamoke pitched the final two frames with a pair of punchouts for the Chiefs.

Winona advances to the third round and will face-off with Waseca on Saturday at 1o a.m. in Owatonna.
