Hard Ball: Dane Iorg edition

Dane Iorg 85For those of you uncertain of how to pronounce Dane’s last name, it would be “Orj,” but despite a last name that’s not the easiest to sound out, Iorg was a solid major league player for a decade, winning a pair of World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 and the Kansas City Royals in ’85, batting a ridiculous .526 (10-19) between those Fall Classics.

It was in Game 6 of that ’85 Series, however, that solidified Iorg’s name in Royals lore forever, when he slapped a one-out, two-run single to right field off of Cardinals fireballing reliever Todd Worrell in the bottom of the ninth to give KC a 2-1 victory and chance to win the title in Game 7, which is exactly what happened. That lone championship banner hanging at Royals Stadium would not be there were it not for Dane Iorg.

Dane took a few moments to speak with us this morning to relive that magical moment, talk about Bret Saberhagen and Dan Quisenberry and what it means to baseball for the Royals to be winning again and his life after baseball…
