Owatonna too much for Winona

The Owatonna High School basketball team shot an incredible 72.7 percent from the floor in the first half and never looked back in a 62-49 Big Nine victory over Winona Senior High School on Friday.

The game was tied at 5-5 early on, but Owatonna (3-3, 3-3 Big Nine) outscored the Winhawks 36-18 to close out the first half. The Huskies had three players score in double-figures, led by Cole Butler with 16, Eli Havelka with 14 and Layne Franke’s 10. Havelka also corralled a game-high nine rebounds for Owatonna.

Winona struggled from the floor and had costly turnovers throughout the night, though P.J. Appicelli netted a game-best 18 points for WSHS (0-6, 0-6).

Trey Bechly and Kale Milek both finished with eight points for the Winhawks, while Tristan Voegeli matched Appicelli with six rebounds.
