Winona girls too much for Mankato West

The Winona Senior High School girls basketball team built up leads of ten-or-more points four times, and the fourth time was the charm in a 74-65 win over Mankato West on Friday.

Every time Winona (11-5, 9-3 Big Nine) built a double-digit cushion, leading by as many as 15 at one point, Mankato West (6-9, 5-7) would storm right back to pull within five, six and five, respectively.

Once the Winhawks built the lead to over ten in the second, they never looked back.

Hallee Hoeppner led WSHS with 20 points to go along with six rebounds, while Abby Winter just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Maria Appicelli added 14 and five rebounds off the bench and Eden Nibbelink went for 11 points and six boards.

Lexi Schoper scored a game-high 26 points for the Scarlets, and equaled Winter’s nine rebounds and Jen Larsen had 12 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

Winona, which is second in the Big Nine, has won seven-of-eight, while Mankato West has dropped four of six.
