Winhawks girls start slow, finish strong

The Winona Senior High School girls basketball team held a five-point with moments to go n the first half before Hallee Hoeppner knocked in a lay-up at the buzzer, which propelled the Winhawks to pull away from Faribault in a 54-37 win on Tuesday.

Hoeppner finished with a game-high 16 points as WSHS (14-7, 12-5 Big Nine) swept its season series with the Falcons.

Justine Schultz accounted for nine points while Eden Nibbelink and Hoeppner each corralled seven rebounds for the Winhawks.

Winona struggled from the free throw line in the first half, shooting just 6-for-12, but recovered to drill a blistering 10-for-12 in the second.

Lauren Isaacson led Faribault (3-18, 1-16) with nine points before fouling out. Grace Amacher and Elana Palmer both contributed eight points and seven rebounds, and Breanna Bresnahan hauled down seven boards for the Falcons.
