Winhawks girls conclude regular season with win over Austin

Hallee Hoeppner scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the second half to lead the Winona Senior High School girls basketball team past Austin 58-50 to close out the regular season and the High School Hoops on HBC schedule on Friday.

Winona (18-8, 16-6 Big Nine) trailed 24-23 at the half, but recovered to win its fourth game in a row and lock down a third place finish in the Big Nine.

Maria Appicelli added 12 while Abby Winter had 11 for the Winhawks, who received a stellar defensive performance from Danneka Voegeli in holding Austin’s (12-14, 10-12) 6-for-3, sophomore center Ruth Koang to just eight points en route to snapping the Packers’ four-game winning streak.

WSHS heads into the opening round of the Class AAA Section 1 playoffs with four consecutive wins and will host Albert Lea on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m..
