Chiefs drop second game, swept in doubleheader
The Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team struggled with control on the mound and were swept in a doubleheader with a 6-1 loss to Sparta at Gabrych Park on Saturday.
Nick Masyga, Owen Burnikel and Justin Rech each had trouble finding the strike zone as they combined to allow four walks and a wild pitch to go along with three passed balls in a game that also featured a pair of errors behind them in the field.
The game was still within reach heading into the sixth inning, but with Winona (9-7) behind 3-1, Sparta Miller batted eight and strung together three hits and two walks to plate three cushion runs and seize a five-run lead.
The lone run for the Chiefs scored on a Brett Schmit single in the third after he had stranded five runners in the first game of the twin bill.
Jay Stensgard remained hot for Winona, going 1-for-3 with a walk and stolen base, while Burnikel walked twice.
The win was the thirteenth in a row for Sparta (24-5).
