Chiefs close out regular season with lopsided win

The Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team closed out its regular season in ugly fashion as they drew fifteen walks in a 14-4, eight-inning victory over Rochester at Gabrych Park on Sunday.

The Chiefs scored seven runs on free passes, though several players had fantastic days at the plate.

Brett Schmit and Jesse Van Brunt were both perfect on the day, as Schmit went 3-for-3 with two walks, a double and two RBI and Van Brunt was 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch.

Schmit and Van Brunt weren’t alone with strong days at the dish. Joe Brinkman finished 2-for-3 with three runs, two walks and a RBI while making two fantastic defensive plays ranging into the outfield from second base. Jay Stensgard walked twice and stole two bases, Zach Benson drew three walks and knocked in two, Travis Hengel had two hits, Bryan Rohde doubled with two RBI, Nate Mraz drove in two runs and Nick Masyga scored twice.

Winona finishes the regular season as champions of the Twin Rivers League East division with a 12-3 record and will take the field at Gabrych Park for the first round of the TRL playoffs on Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
