Cardinals squeak by St. Olaf in five sets

The Saint Mary’s volleyball team had only lost four sets over its last matches, but had to scratch and claw for a 3-2 victory over St. Olaf at Saint Mary’s Gym on Wednesday.

The Cardinals used a 14-2 run for a relatively easy first-set triumph, 25-15, but St. Olaf (8-13, 0-6 MIAC) stormed back for a 25-20 win to knot the match at 1-1.

SMU (13-3, 5-1) handled the Oles once again in the third (25-14) before St. Olaf claimed a hard-fought fourth set, 28-26 to push the contest the distance.

Saint Mary’s scored 10 of the first 15 points in the final stanza, but the Oles pulled within one four times, including 14-13, before Alex Peterson slammed one of her team-high 17 kills to secure the match for the Cardinals, their ninth win in 10 matches.

Macki Fadness had 13 kills and Molly Urban contributed 10, while Brandi Blattner came off the bench for nine.

Brittney Hanson (29) and Tayler MacVey (20) teamed for 49 assists. Jenna Sullivan finished with a team-best 22 digs, followed closely by Lex Krogstad’s 19.

Megan Grimes notched a match-high 20 kills and Kersten Bork dished out 41 assists for St. Olaf, whose losing streak has reached 10.
