Saint Mary’s gets back on track with win over Augsburg
Coming off of a season-high four-match losing streak, the Saint Mary’s volleyball returned to the friendly confines of Saint Mary’s Gym for its final regular season home contest and downed Augsburg 3-1 on Wednesday.
SMU (17-7, 6-1 MIAC) had won just two its past 14 sets, and dropped the opener to the Auggies 25-23 despite having leads as large as six on three occasions, but quickly rebounded with three straight wins to take the match.
The Cardinals found themselves behind twice in the second but rallied to even the match, 25-22.
Mike Lester’s squad came away with a less stressful victory in the third set, 25-15, but had to scratch and claw to claim the fourth.
Neither team led by more than three at any point in the set, Augsburg (15-6, 4-4) led 22-19 before Saint Mary’s ran off three consecutive points to tie it up, then came away with five of the next eight points to earn the victory, 27-25 and snap the Auggies’ three-match winning streak.
Macki Fadness led the SMU with 11 kills and Molly Urban contributed 10. Alex Peterson had nine, while Jenna Sullivan and Cassidy Bittle each pitched in with seven. Brittney Hanson (24) and Tayler MacVey (22) combined for 46 assists, while three Cardinals — Morgan Thomas (19), Lex Krogstad (16) and Sullivan (16) — had 10 or more digs.
Ashley Peper had a match-high 19 kills for the Augsburg, and Taylor Linn (12) and Jordan Weedling (10) teamed for 22 kills.
