Upper Iowa tops Winona State for first time
Jack Nelson became Winona State’s all-time passing yardage leader, but it wasn’t enough to overcome five total touchdowns from Dimitri Morales as Upper Iowa defeated the Warriors for the first time in twelve tries, 35-21 at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday.
Nelson completed 33-of-57 passes for 361 yards to surpass Winona State Hall of Famer Jake Goettl as the all-time leader in Winona State history.
Morales run it in from two yards out with 5:40 to go in the first quarter to get the scoring started for Upper Iowa (5-2, 5-2 NSIC), but Nelson found Cameron Johnson to tie it at 7-7 just a couple of minutes later.
The Peacocks scored the next three touchdowns on a four-yard run by Morales, who later connected with Jalen Amis and Jarred Edmonds to give UIU a 28-7 lead.
Paul Preston punched it in from the 1-yard line to cut WSU’s (3-4, 3-4) deficit to 28-14 at the half. Preston picked up 117 yards rushing on 17 carries in the first two quarters.
Preston would notch his second score of the day on an eight-yard tote to make it a one-score game, 28-21, but Morales would find Trey MacTaggart with just under five minutes to go in the third to make it 35-21, which would go on to represent the final score.
Preston would account for 143 yards on 22 carries for the day, while Johnson finished with eight receptions for a career-high 126 yards. Josh Mikes had seven catches for 94 yards and Alan May pulled down six Nelson passes for 51 yards.
Morales was 32-for-42 for 378 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and finished with 47 yards on the ground and two scores for Upper Iowa.
Collin Corcoran led the Warriors with 12 tackles, including a sack, which tied him for eighth on WSU’s all-time list with 17.5 for his career. Mike Imperiale also had nine tackles and a forced fumble for Winona State.
