High School Hoops: Toivonen leads Wingers past Winhawks
Travis Toivonen scored a game-high 38 points to lead the Red Wing boys basketball team past Winona Senior High School 73-62 to open the season on Friday.
Toivonen scored 18 points in the first half, but it was Ben Munson who helped the Red Wing (1-0, 1-0, Big Nine) build a 12-point halftime lead.
Winona (0-1, 0-1) knotted the contest at 19-19 early, when Munson hit the first of five 3-pointers to put the Wingers on top. With 29 points, Toivonen (18) and Munson (11) outscored the Winhawks’ team in the opening stanza to provide Red Wing with a 39-27 advantage at the break.
WSHS would not go quietly, however, sprinting out to a 13-4 run out of the locker room to tie the game at 43-43 on a Dakota Matthees 3-pointer.
Toivonen immediately notched back-to-back layups, however, and the Wingers never looked back.
Toivonen corralled 10 rebounds and connected on 15-of-16 free throws en route to 38 points, and Munson finished with 17 for Red Wing.
P.J. Appicelli led Winona with 17 points and six rebounds, while Kale Milek poured in 14, 12 of which came in the second half.
