On-deck: Winhawks girls hockey host Rochester Mayo

The Winona Senior High School girls hockey team will be looking for its first win of the season and end a nineteen-game overall losing streak when they face Rochester Mayo at Bud King Ice Arena on Thursday.

The Winhawks were shutout twice to begin the season and have been outscored 27-8 for the year, but have lost two of their last three by a single goal.

Michaela Beberg leads Winona (0-6, 0-5 Big Nine) with three goals, while four other players (Teghan Grulkowski, Emily Hoven, Dicey Spring and Sommer Thompson) have accounted for two points.

Autumn Vieth has faced an average of 43.5 shots per game in net for WSHS, making 234 saves with a 4.43 goals against average.

Rochester Mayo (1-7, 1-4) dropped its first seven to open the season, but won 5-4 at Austin in its last action on December 1.

Five players are tied with five points to lead Mayo’s scoring, led by Becca Schmitz’s five goals. Brooke Leone has four goals and an assist, while Maddie Sawyer has lit the lamp twice with three assists, Ashley Hammes has a tally and four helpers and Brooke Haskins has five assists.

The Spartans have been outscored 45-20 and have surrendered at least 14 goals in all three periods for the year, including 16 in the first.

Sophie Butterfass has faced 257 shots and sports a 5.11 goals against.

Winona has not won since December 16 of last season, when they defeated Albert Lea 2-1 at Bud King.
