On-deck: Saint Mary’s basketball doubleheader v. St. Thomas on Saturday
The Saint Mary’s basketball teams will host St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Mary’s Gym on Saturday.
After surrendering 45 points in the second half, the Saint Mary’s men (4-8, 2-6) fell to Concordia 81-65 on January 13 for its sixth consecutive loss.
Aaron Romportl led SMU with 15 points, while Wylie Ferron went for 14 points and 10 rebounds and Quashingm Smith-Pugh pitched in 11 points against Concordia.
Connor Kaiser leads Saint Mary’s at 12.4 points per game, while Smith-Pugh goes for 11.1 and Ferron 9.6. Smith-Pugh also averages 2.7 assists per game and Ferron corrals 7.8 rebounds per.
Romportl is second in MIAC for 3-point field goal percentage (54.5)
No. 6 St. Thomas (12-1, 7-1) have won eight in a row and are undefeated on the road (5-0) for the season.
Taylor Montero is the leading scorer for the Tommies at 15.7 points per game and is the top 3-point shooter in the conference (55.7 percent). Grant Shaeffer (14.8), Cortez Tillman (13.4) and Ryan Saarela (11.2) also score in double figures for St. Thomas. Saarela is the leading rebounder in the league (9.3 per game).
Saarela is the top rebounder in the league (9.3 per game) for a Tommies team that are the second-best rebounding team in the league (35.8), while SMU is fourth (35.3).

The Saint Mary’s women (13-1, 7-0) have won five in a row, including a 61-55 win over Concordia on January 13, and are enjoying quite a run from defending MIAC Athlete of the Week, Brandi Blattner.
The Dover-Eyota native scored 17 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double, and scored a career-high 27 points in back-to-back games against St. Olaf and St. Catherine. Blattner is third in the league at 16.3 points per game and leads the conference with 9.7 rebounds per.
Bridget Pethke also went for 17 points against Concordia, to go along with seven assists and four steals.
Micaela Meredith averages 13.9 points per game for Saint Mary’s.
The Cardinals lead the MIAC in offense (70.7 ppg) and rebounds (41.8) and boast of a 6-0 home ledger.
SMU faces off with No. 22 St. Thomas (11-3, 5-2), which will travel to Saint Mary’s Gym sporting a 5-1 road record.
The Tommies are led by Kaitlin Langer, who tops the league in scoring (17.4 ppg) and field goal percentage (56.8), and is fifth in rebounding (8.5). Gabby Zehrer is also a dangerous player at 13.6 points per game, while ranking second in the conference in field goal percentage (56.3) and fifth in 3-point percentage (40). Katie Stone is the third St. Thomas player scoring in double figures for the season at 11.2 points per game. Langer also leads St. Thomas in rebounds at 8.5 per game.
Winona native and Cotter graduate Paige Gernes is tied with Zehrer at 2.6 assists per.
