St. Thomas hand SMU women first home loss

The No. 22 St. Thomas women’s basketball team connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half and held off a fourth quarter comeback to hand Saint Mary’s its first home and MIAC loss of the season, 76-67 on Saturday at Saint Mary’s Gym.

On the strength of six triples in the opening quarter, St. Thomas (12-3, 6-2) built a 27-17 lead after one, and held a 46-29 lead at the half.

SMU (13-2, 7-1) gained some steam late in the third quarter and sliced the Tommies’ lead to 68-62 with under five minutes remaining, but a Lucia Renikoff 3-pointer pushed the lead back to 71-62 for St. Thomas, and the Cardinals simply ran out of time.

Micaela Meredith notched a game-high 24 points, which included an 11-for-11 performance from the free throw line for Saint Mary’s. Sam Jones accounted for 15 points, while Bridget Pethke poured in 11 points to go with six assists.

Brandi Blattner pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and just missed her fifth consecutive double-double, as she finished with nine points.

Katie Stone paced St. Thomas with 18 points. Renikoff had 16 and Lauren Fischer had 13 for the defending MIAC regular season champion.
