Tommies coast past Cardinals men

The No. 6 St. Thomas men’s basketball team used a 15-4 run to close out the first half and never looked back as they eased to a 91-61 win over Saint Mary’s in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tilt at Saint Mary’s Gym on Saturday.

While SMU (4-9, 2-7) knocked down nine 3-pointers in the contest, St. Thomas countered with 10 of its own, including five from Cortez Tillman. The Tommies used that late first half push to take a 43-27 lead into the halftime locker room and only built upon it in the second half.

Tillman scored a game-high 21 points for St. Thomas (13-1, 8-1), which has won nine in a row. Ryan Saarela poured in 19 to go along with 10 rebounds and Taylor Montero finished with 13 points for the Tommies.

Aaron Romportl led the Cardinals with 11 points, while Quashigm Smith-Pugh and Wylie Ferron each contributed 10 for Saint Mary’s. Ferron added eight rebounds for SMU.

Saint Mary’s has lost seven consecutive games.
