High School Hoops: Dover-Eyota v. P-E-M girls
A pair of behemoths square off in a Three Rivers Conference match-up as the Dover-Eyota girls basketball team travels to Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs and Eagles are the two top ranked teams in Section 1AA and are both undefeated in conference play, but that’s about to change.
Dover-Eyota (13-3, 10-0) are the defending state champions and have won 10 of its last 11. That lone loss came to No. 3 Winona (1AAA) at the MLK Classic by a score of 77-56 on January 18.
The Eagles’ average margin of victory stands at 26 points per game, and their smallest victory on the season came by 22 points.
Madison Nelson and Megan Hintz do the bulk of the scoring and rebounding for D-E, with Nelson going for 21.2 points, nine rebounds and four steals per, while Hintz accounts for 18 points, 10.5 boards and has been sensational from the floor, making 82 of her 140 attempts on the season (58.5 percent).
Gracie Gellerson averages 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds as well for Dover-Eyota.
P-E-M (15-1, 11-0) have won seven straight, with its only setback for the year coming at the hands of Rochester Mayo, which is ranked No. 12 in 1AAAA at the Rochester Rotary Tournament in a 56-55 defeat on December 30.
The Bulldogs’ average margin of victory is 38, with their slimmest triumph coming by 16 points.
P-E-M has been astounding from the field, shooting 49.8 percent as a team for the season (383-for-768). In fact, five players — Morgan Shindelar (62), Hayley Dessner (59.3), Emmaline Polson (58.1), Chloe Holtz (51.4) and Sarah Hart (51.4) — all shooting better than fifty percent from the floor.
Hart leads the team at 16.5 points per game, but is one of just six players averaging at least 9.3 per game. Chloe Holtz and Hayley Dessner score 10.9 and 10.3 per night, respectively, while Emmaline Polson (9.9), Tessa Hubbard (9.3) and Morgan Shindelar (9.3) are threatening to climb over the double-digit threshold.
Hart also averages 5.5 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 4.7 assists per game, and shoots a blistering 47.9 percent (23-for-48) from 3-point range.
Dessner leads the Bulldogs with 6.5 boards, while Holtz corrals 5.5 per.
