High School Hoops: P-E-M v. Dover-Eyota girls on Friday

The Three Rivers Conference West title will be on the line when Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Dover-Eyota, the top two team in Section 1AA square off on Friday.

If P-E-M wins, they take the West division outright. Should the Eagles win,  however, the rivals would share the title.

The Bulldogs have not lost since falling 56-55 to 1AAAA’s No. 2 Rochester Mayo at the Rochester Rotary Tournament on December 30, and are on a 15-game winning streak.

P-E-M (23-1, 17-0) have an average margin of victory of 33.7 points this season, and defeated the Eagles 66-53 in the teams’ previous match-up on January 26.

Balance and depth have been the key for the Bulldogs this season, who boast of three players scoring in double figures. Sarah Hart sets the pace at 16.2 points per game, followed by Hayley Dessner (10.2) and Emmaline Polson (10.2). Chloe Holtz (9.9), Tessa Hubbard (8.9) and Morgan Shindelar (8.9) are all nipping at double digits with with at least 8.9 points per, respectively.

Polson leads the team with 7.5 boards, while Hart accounts for 6.1 and dishes out a team-best 5.2 assists per outing.

Defending state champion Dover-Eyota (20-5, 16-1) meanwhile, have won seven of eight since its meeting with the Bulldogs, and have done so by an average of 22 points per. The Eagles’ lone loss over that stretch came at the hands of Goodhue, the top-ranked team in 1A West, 60-57 on February 6.

Megan Hintz and Madison Nelson continue to shine for D-E, accounting for 60 percent of the team’s scoring and 52 percent of its rebounding.

Hintz averages 19.6 points and 10.4 rebounds, while Nelson goes for 21.1 points and 9.9 boards per outing.

The dynamic duo have combined for 1,021 of the Eagle’s 1,690 points and 508 of their 975 rebounds.

Gracie Gellersen contributes 6.4 points and Ashlee Olson averages 3.9 assists per game, as well.

P-E-M and Dover-Eyota have split its last four contests. The Bulldogs won a little over three weeks ago and snapped the Eagles’ 23-game winning streak with a 56-51 win last February 20. Also last season, D-E ran away with a 71-48 victory on January 27 and outlasted P-E-M in a 71-62 overtime win in the 1AA Section Final on March 13.
