Seniors lead SMU past Hamline on Senior Night

Connor Kaiser, Mark Schumacher and Will Swiggum all took the floor at Saint Mary’s Gym for the final time on Wednesday, and the departing trio made the most of it, leading the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team past Hamline 74-61 on Senior Night.

Kaiser and Schumacher each scored 11 points, while Swiggum finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists to give SMU (9-15, 7-12 MIAC) its most conference wins since the 2009-10 team went 7-13.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half, which had Hamline (4-20, 2-17) up 33-31 at the break thanks to a Quinton Garvis 3-pointer.

The Cardinals opened the second half with an 11-0 nothing and boasted of a 10-point lead three times, but the Pipers clawed back to within three on four separate occasions, including 59-56 with four minutes to play.

SMU were not going to fall on Senior Night, however.

The Redbirds outscored Hamline 15-5 to close out the game, a stretch which included a 10-for-12 performance from the free throw line to secure the victory.

Kevin Gleason led Saint Mary’s with a career-high 18 points and Wylie Ferron delivered 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Cardinals will close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to St. Thomas for a 1 p.m. showdown.
