High School Hoops: Winona girls cruise past Red Wing on Senior Night
Undersized and shorthanded, Red Wing ran out of gas as the Winona Senior High School girls basketball team sent Megan Bakken, Jayne Emerson and Hallee Hoeppner out with a 70-44 victory for Senior Night on Tuesday.
Without leading scorers Tayzha Buck and McKenzie Cota, who were out with injuries, Red Wing (7-16, 6-14) jumped out to a 5-1 lead early, but were outscored 28-17 to finish out the half and trailed 39-22 at the break.
Eleven players gathered at least one rebound for Winona (19-6, 15-6 Big Nine), and four snagged at least five. Abby Winter led the way with 12 boards, while Danneka Voegeli had seven, Emerson finished with six and Maria Appicelli contributed five. WSHS outrebounded Red Wing 46-24 for the game.
Winter also scored a game-high 17 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. Hoeppner added 16 and Voegeli pitched in 13. Bakken pulled down two rebounds.
It was the third consecutive victory for Winona.
Morgan Zebro led the Wingers with 11 points and Hannah Rodgers dropped nine. Rodgers and Rebecca Swenning each accounted for six rebounds, as well.
Red Wing have lost six in a row.
