SMU Cardinals softball take two from Concordia-Moorhead
The St. Mary’s University softball team swept a double-header with Concordia-Moorhead over the weekend 3-nothing and 10-3 in MIAC action at Saint Mary’s Field.
In game one, the Cardinals’ Ashley Betzold was stellar on the mound, scattering four hits and striking out 11 Cobber batters on her way to her school-record 53rd complete game. Betzold scored what proved to be the game-winning run when she scored on a two-out RBI single by Kali Aldrich after walking to lead of the second inning. St. Mary’s Brittney Birkhauser added two insurance runs, belting solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cement the game one victory.
Betzold was on the mound again for game two, where she picked up the win and and her 54th complete game. The Cardinals were first on the board in game two. Stanzy Snyder and Mariah Harper drew back-to-back walks. Snyder scored when Kathi Opsahl cracked a two-out double to left giving St. Mary’s a 1-nothing lead.
The Cobbers scored a pair of runs in the top of the third frame to take a 2-1 lead before Birkhauser belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning, her third home run of the day, putting St. Mary’s back on top 3-2.
Concordia-Moorhead’s Nicole Johannes tied the score at 3-3 with a solo homer in the top of the fourth off Betzold. But the Cardinals came back in their half of the inning, scoring twice and taking a 5-3 lead. St. Mary’s scored two more times in the 5th and three more in the 6th inning to make the final score 10-3.
St. Mary’s finished game 2 with 13 hits lead by Snyder, Birkhauser and Katie Ehlenfeldt who each had two hits and two RBIs. Tessa Kuschke also had two hits.
The Cardinals are now 9-11 in the MIAC, 20-16 overall as they head into their final games of the season, a conference doubleheader at Augsburg on Tuesday.
