Warriors Close Out Exhibition Season Over The Blugolds

The Winona State Men’s Basketball team may have had a sluggish start to the exhibition season against Carroll University, but did not experience the same problems against UW-Eau Claire on November 7th.

The Warriors leaped out of the gate scoring the first 9 points of the game on 3-3-point shots.  Kyle Bauman had 2 of them, while Isaiah Gray added another.  In fact, the Warriors opened the game on a 12-4 run, before the Blugolds could catch their breath.

Winona State looked to be on their way to a route, when they held a 10-point lead with 9:40 left to go in the first half, but UW-Eau Claire  would start to chip away, and trailed by just 3 points at Halftime, 35-32.

The Warriors would maintain their lead, and even build it back up to 9 points with 12:42 to go, but a late surge by Eau Claire made it a game.

After a layup by Riley Bambenek put the Warriors up 58-50, the Blugolds went on an 8-0 run to tie the game with 8:16 left in the second half.  Jack Martinek would give Eau Claire a 2-point lead at 62-60, but that would be the only time the Blugolds would be on top.

The Warriors would pull away late on the strength of their free-throw shooting.  After the tie, the Warriors went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to lock down a 70-65 win.

Four Warriors ended the night in double figures.  Kyle Bauman led the way with 17 points and 7 rebounds.  Charlie Koontz had 15 points and 8 boards, while Corey Jeffs had 13 points, and Riley Bambenek added 12.

The Warriors will begin the regular season on Saturday, November 12th, when they host UW-Stout in the first basketball game played in the renovated McCown Gymnasium.  HBC TV 25 will be on hand to record the game as an Extra Point broadcast.  You can see a replay of the game on November 14th at Noon on HBC TV 25, HD Channel 525.
