Warrior Women’s Basketball Wins McCown Gym Debut

Both the Winona State Warrior Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams were able to christen the new McCown Gymnasium floor with a win.

The Warrior Women achieved that goal with a 68-40 win over Concordia-Wisconsin on November 22.

Winona State took control early, and never really let the Falcons establish any kind of offensive rhythm.  The Warriors game plan early was to deny any inside scoring, and dominated Points In The Paint, 32-18.

WSU also dominated in rebounds, 37-26 over the Falcons, and forced 17 turnovers, turning those miscues into 17 points.

The Warrior bench also did their job, although they were at a numbers disadvantage.  WSU had just 7 bench players to turn to, compared to 11 for Concordia-Wisconsin, but the Warrior bench had a 27-14 point lead over their counterpart.

Spread-out scoring was also a key for the Warriors, as 10 different players registered in the scoring column.  Tara Roelofs led the way for the Warriors with 13 points, while Liz Evenocheck added 9, and Jenny Wieland came off the bench for 8 points.

The Falcons were led by Brianna Wagner’s 14 points, and Winona native Audrey Scharmer’s 8 points.

The Warriors close out their non-conference slate with a 5-1 record.  They will open NSIC play on Saturday, November 26 against Upper Iowa at McCown Gymnasium.  That game can be seen live on HBC TV 25 at 4 PM.
