Red Rangers Skate Past Winona Boys Hockey
The offense of Ben Zieglbein and the goaltending of Willem Alvarado was too much for the Winona Senior High School Boys Hockey team as the LaCrosse Logan/Central Red Rangers earned a 9-1 win over the Winhawks at Bud King Ice Arena on November 29.
Zieglbein scored 4 of the Red Ranger goals, and assisted on another while Alvarado didn’t allow a Winhawk goal until early on in the Third Period.
Winona fell behind 3-0 after the first period of play, but got a huge opportunity in the Second Period, when Gabe Bryant of the Red Rangers was called for a major boarding penalty, giving the Winhawks a 5-minute Power Play. That was the first penalty called in the game. Winona had their best offensive looks of the night during the penalty, but they just couldn’t get one past Alvarado.
Shortly after the Red Rangers killed off the major penalty, they were back on the kill when Andrew Kjos was sent to the box to serve a 2-minute penalty. It was during that penalty that the Red Rangers were able to get a shorthanded goal. Zieglbein set up Will Bryant to put LaCrosse up 5-0. Zieglbein’s second goal of the game came late in the second, allowing the Red Rangers to head into the second intermission up 6-0.
Winona started to get a little more confident on the ice in the Third Period, and took the zero off the scoreboard when Zach Buerck found the back of the net off an assist from Ty Mannor. It was Buerck’s first goal of the season, and the first assist of the year for Mannor.
That, however, would be the only offense of the night for Winona. LaCrosse would score three more goals in the final period, including two more from Zieglbein, to get to the 9-1 final.
Winona is now 0-2 on the season, and will next play on Friday, December 2 when they take on Worthington on the road.
