Winhawks Soar Over Wingers On Way To Section Championship Game
The Winona Winhawks flexed their muscles, and put their Section 1 AAAA Quarterfinal game away early, in a 42-6 win over Red Wing.
Winona struck first, just 56 seconds into the game, as Riley Bosteter found Dakota Matthees for a 20 yard touchdown play to put the Winhawks up 7-0.
The Winhawk defense then went to work, stifling almost every Red Wing drive, getting the ball back into the hands of their offense.
Josh Bade put the Winhawks up by 2 scores just before the end of the first quarter, hauling in a Bosteter pass, scoring from 23 yards out.
Bosteter would then start the scoring early in the second quarter, notching his 13th rushing touchdown of the season, advancing the ball 9 yards to the endzone for a 21-0 lead.
Red Wing would get their first spark of the game when they recovered a Winona fumble on the Winhawks next offensive drive, but couldn’t get anything going, and turned the ball back over to Winona when quarterback Seth Yeatman threw an interception to Winona offensive lineman Nick Waldo.
Trevor Pomeroy, who made his first start of the season at running back, then took over, and scored two touchdowns in just over a minute of game play. Pomeroy scored on runs of 15 and 1 yards respectively, to eventually give Winona a 35-0 lead. Pomeroy ended the night with 153 yards on the ground, after gaining just 203 yards the previous 8 games of the season.
Terrell Hall would complete the first half with an explosive 59 yard touchdown run from scrimmage, giving Winona a 42-0 halftime lead.
The second half of the game would be relatively quiet, as Red Wing tried to take the 0 off the board, and Winona just looked to hold on to their shutout.
Levi Schewe had a defensive highlight in the third quarter for Winona, intercepting a Yeatman pass, snuffing out a Winger drive.
Toward the end of the game, Red Wing collected their only offensive score of the game, when Jack Kelly ran in a score from 2 yards out. Red Wing ends their season at 1-9.
Winona (9-0) will head to a rematch on November 3 against Kasson-Mantorville (9-0). The Winhawks bested the KoMets in the Section Championship last season, 44-13, and looked to be on a collision course again all season long. This year’s Section Championship will be played at 7pm next Friday at Rochester Mayo.
