Cardinal Women Edge Martin Luther For Season Opening Win
The Regular Season opener for the Saint Mary’s Cardinal Women’s Basketball team proved to be a roller coaster ride. One that the Cardinals stuck out for a 61-60 win.
Play was a little slow coming out of the gate, as the Cardinals made just one of their 9 shots in the first quarter. They made up for their drought on the floor, by hitting their free-throws, where they were a perfect 6-of-6 in the first. The Knights fared a little better, going 5-of-18 from the field, but missed all 4 of their free throw attempts, taking a 10-8 lead.
In the second quarter, play improved dramatically, and the Cardinals took the lead going in to Halftime, at 30-25.
The third quarter saw the game tighten, as both sides saw their top players lock in. Brandi Blattner scored 9 points in the third, and Abby Winter found her stroke, hitting 2 shots in the frame. For the Knights, three players reached double digits in Moriah Hackbarth, Grace Schultz and Jade St. Germaine.
The Cardinals would build a lead, then see it slip away several times in the Fourth Quarter, and then started to worry when the Knights tied the game at 60 with 1:30 left to play.
SMU’s defense would hold the Knights scoreless the rest of the way, while the Cardinals would get all they needed to secure the win, when Blattner hit a single free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game.
Blattner ended the night with 22 points, and 11 rebounds, the 19th double-double of her Cardinal career. Abby Winter also hauled in 11 rebounds, and added 6 points. Savannah Blees and Kirsten Keefe both had 7 points.
The Knights were led by Jade St. Germaine’s 18 points, Grace Schultz added 15 with 10 rebounds, and Moriah Hackbarth chipped in 13.
The Cardinals will play UW-LaCrosse and UM-Morris on back-to-back nights in the St. Benedict Tournament on November 17 & 18. Their next home game is November 29 against St. Scholastica.
