Wabasha-Kellogg Girls Fall To Schaeffer Academy In Season Opener
The Season Debut of High School Hoops on HBC featured a pair of teams that were hoping to have a breakout season this year. The Wabasha-Kellogg Girls are coming off a 5-21 season last year, but won a playoff game for the third consecutive year. Meanwhile, Schaeffer Academy looked to build off a 9-17 record, their best season in school history. The Lions were also looking to avenge a playoff loss last year – at the hands of the Falcons.
The first game of the season was close for most of the game, as the teams tried to shake off the rust at the beginning of the year. The first basket of the game wasn’t scored until 4 minutes into the first half, when Schaeffer’s Michaela Sanger scored on a put-back under the hoop.
The teams went back-and-forth in scoring for most of the game, as Schaeffer took a 20-18 lead into halftime.
Wabasha-Kellogg stormed back, and took an 8-point lead midway through the second half.
However, Megan Boegel took charge for the Lions, and kept her team within striking distance. Boegel ended the night with a game-high 18 points, including 2 free throws with 13.3 seconds on the clock, to ice the game for the Lions at 41-40. Lillia Newsome had 7 for Schaeffer Academy, and Sanger had 6.
For the Falcons, Olivia Passe had 10 points, and Claire Gosse scored 9. Anna Schneider gave Wabasha-Kellogg a big boost off the bench, playing tight defense, while contributing 5 points.
