Eagles Soar Past Tigers

Lake City entered their matchup with Rochester Lourdes hoping to break a couple of streaks.  The Tigers has lost their last 13 games, their last 16 regular season games, and since 2004, their last 15 games to the Eagles.

The last time the Tigers won, it was an upset – a 2016 playoff game against Plainview-Elgin-Millville, where the Tigers outlasted the Bulldogs 64-42.

Rochester Lourdes wasted little time taking the upper hand.  With 9:09 left to go in the First Quarter, Eagles Quarterback Matthew Hayford found Pat Leary for a 47-yard touchdown strike to get on the board first at 7-0.

A few possessions later, the Eagles expanded their lead when Zach Jungles ran in a 19 yard score to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead in the First Quarter.

It was more of the same to start the Second Quarter.  Hayford kept the ball himself with 10:02 to go before the half, scoring on a 16-yard run to make it a 21-0 lead.

On the next Lourdes possession, Aiden Creeley intercepted the ball for the Tigers, but Lake City could not convert that chance into points.

Instead, undaunted by the turnover, the Eagles kept chugging along.  Hayford connected on a 40-yard strike to Hayden Brown, and Jungels broke tackles and spun downfield for a hard-fought 37-yard touchdown run to send the Eagles into the break with a 35-0 lead.

Hayford continued to spot his receivers early in the second half, finding Jake Grotboer for a 28-yard touchdown to expand the Eagle lead to 42-0.

The Tigers kept fighting to the end, and took the 0 off the board when Derek Meincke ran in a 17-yard score near the end of the game to make the final 42-6.

The Tigers (0-4) will host Plainview-Elgin-Millville next week (1-3), who picked up their first win of the season in a thrilling 29-28 overtime win over Kasson-Mantorville.  Lourdes (4-0) will continue their quest for a third-consecutive trip to State, when they host Byron (2-2).

Football Night on HBC will be at the Winona Winhawk (4-0) game, as they host Rochester Century (3-1).  Winona is coming off a come-from-behind win over Mankato West, the only team to best Century this season.  The Panthers were shut out by the Scarlets in Week 1, and have rolled since, piling up a combined 110 points against New Prague, Red Wing and Rochester Mayo over the past 3 weeks.  Gametime is 7pm on HBC SD Channel 25, HD 525!
