Bulldogs Celebrate Seniors With Win
It was a night to honor 4 members of the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Boys Basketball team for their accomplishments on and off the court, and it was a rousing success, as those 4 Seniors combined for 47 points in the Bulldogs’ 86-51 win over Southland.
Senior Griffin Doughty, who will play for Division 3 St. Olaf next year, led the way with 19 points. Joe Irish, who will join the US Navy after High School, scored 13 points. Shawn Bennett, who will study Health Science at Minnesota State University in Mankato, scored 11 points. And Kole Reiss, who plans to play football for Division 3 UW-LaCrosse next year, scored 4 points.
The Bulldogs came out of the gate energized on Senior night, scoring the first 5 points of the game. Southland would pull within one point with 15:54 left in the first half, but an easy trip through the lane, and through 3 defenders by Doughty would expand the lead, and force the Rebels to call a timeout and sub their entire lineup.
PEM would expand their lead from there, and not look back, leading the game wire-to-wire. The Bulldogs took a 44-32 lead into the Halftime break, and managed to get the game clock to running time late in the second half, while using their timeouts to sub out their Seniors and top players, to get one more round of applause from the Home fans.
Besides the Seniors, PEM received production from others on the team as well. Conner Schumacher tied for the second-most points of the night, chipping in 13. Blake Herber, who ran the point most of the night, not only distributed the ball well, but scored 12 points of his own.
Southland was led by Daniel Boe, who scored 11 points, and Matt Mueller, who came off the bench to score 10.
PEM (14-11, 10-5) will close out their regular season on February 22 against Wabasha-Kellogg on the road. Seedings for the 1AA Boys Playoffs will be released this weekend.
