Winhawks Protect Nest In Win Over Falcons
It was a big night for the Winona Winhawk Football team, and running back Trevor Pomeroy. The Winhawks earned a 38-6 win over Faribault, and Pomeroy earned another entry into the Winhawk record book.
Last season, Pomeroy rushed for a single-season school record 1610 yards. Friday, September 6th, Pomeroy gained 165 yards to put his career total at 2242, breaking Paul Klinger’s career record of 2184 yards. More impressively, Pomeroy saw limited action in the second half, due to the Winhawk lead.
Winona’s offense was slow to start against Faribault, settling for a 20-yard Bryan Cassellius field goal on the opening drive. However, Winona would get the ball back quickly, when Aaron Witt recovered a fumble with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter to set up the Winhawks with a short field. 18 game-seconds later, Jackson Nibbelink found Austin Mlynczak in the endzone for a 37-yard score.
Nibbelink would put the game out of reach just before the end of the first quarter, with a pass to Sam Kanne, who broke tackles to complete a 30 yard TD score. That put Winona up 17-0.
Witt picked up his second fumble recovery on the next Falcon drive, and Pomeroy turned the turnover into points, expanding the Winona lead to 24-0 with 10:28 to go before the half.
Faribault would try to get back into the game with a defensive takeaway of their own, courtesy of an interception by Eddie Nigon. Faribault couldn’t make a dent in the Winhawk defense, and punted the ball back. Pomeroy closed out the half, the Falcon chance to come back, and the rushing record, gaining all 49 yards in a 5 play drive, to end the half with 114 yards on the ground, and a team lead of 31-0.
Pomeroy would score once more, in the third quarter, after Dayne Gamoke’s interception on Faribault’s second half opening drive.
The Falcons avoided the shutout with a 36-yard TD run by Taylor Day early in the 4th quarter, but by then it was too late for the Falcons to add any more.
Winona improves to 2-0 on the season, and will be on the road next week to take on Mankato East. Faribault (0-2), will look for their first win of the season next week at home against Byron (1-1). Football Night on HBC will be in Red Wing, as the Wingers (0-2) host Cannon Falls (2-0). Game coverage starts at 6:45pm on Friday, September 14th.
