Ramblers Shut Out On Homecoming

It was not a happy Homecoming for the Cotter Rambler football team.  The Hayfield Vikings spoiled the party with a 41-0 victory.

The Ramblers looked to be up for the battle early on.  Cotter forced Hayfield to punt on their opening possession, but mishandled the punt, giving the ball right back to the Vikings, who made good on their second chance.  Brady Nelson led the Vikings on a scoring drive capped by a 2-yard strike to Patrick Towey to go up 7-0.

The teams would trade possessions, until Hayfield found the endzone again, thanks to a 2-yard run by Dawson Andree.

Down 14-0, Cotter looked to get the next break, when Hayfield fumbled a punt, recovered by the Ramblers in Hayfield territory.  However, Rambler Quarterback Tate Gilbertson locked in with receiver Peyton Weifenbach.  Ethan Slaathaug jumped the route and picked off the pass, returning it 83 yards to the Rambler 10 yard line.

Instead of a closer game, Hayfield busted the game wide open when Nelson connected with Luke Dudycha for a 10-yard touchdown to take a 20-0 lead into halftime.

After the Cotter Band performed their field show, the Ramblers couldn’t convert on their first offensive possession of the second half.  Hayfield quickly put the game out of reach on a 58-yard run by Carter Kyllo, and converted a 2-point try to take a 28-0 lead.

Shortly before the end of the 3rd Quarter, Hayfield added another score – a 9-yard run by Karver Heydt to go up 34-0.

The Vikings would get one more touchdown to close out the game, an 81-yard catch by Jake Risius to send the game to a running clock.

The Ramblers (0-5) will remain home next week to host Lewiston-Altura (5-0) next week.  Hayfield (3-2) will travel to Fillmore Central (1-4).

Football Night On HBC will be at Dover-Eyota (0-5) as they host Caledonia (5-0), owners of the longest current winning streak in the United States at 59 games.  Pre-game will be at 6:50, with kickoff at 7pm on October 4 only on HBC TV 25.
