Cardinals Use Ground Game To Vanquish Vikings

Cole Mundt had a signature game as the Lewiston-Altura Cardinals stayed perfect on the season in a 33-18 win over the Hayfield Vikings.

The Cardinals used their ground game early and often in the win  – after the opening kickoff, the Cardinals held the ball for a seven and a half minute drive, capped by a Blake Schilling 5-yard TD pass to Sam Bronk to take an early 6-0 lead.

Hayfield would go 3-and out on their first possession, and it looked like a rout was on.

However, Hayfield recovered from the early blows to put together a great drive in the second quarter, and tied the game when Brady Nelson connected with Luke Dudycha for a 9-yard TD, tying the game at 6.

That’s when Cole Mundt really took over.  Mundt took a carry in the next Cardinal offensive drive, 38 yards for a touchdown to expand the Cardinal lead to 13-6.

Lewiston-Altura nearly scored again before the half, but Patrick Towey intercepted a Schilling pass in the endzone with 53 seconds to go, to keep the game close at the half.

The 3rd quarter was a largely defensive quarter, except for one drive finished off by Mundt’s 2nd score of the night, a 3-yard run to make it 19-6.

Mundt scored again at the beginning of the 4th quarter, a 10-yard dash to pull away, 26-6.

Hayfield wasn’t quite done yet, but their offense took a little too long to develop, down 20 points in the 4th quarter.  Ethan Slaathaug caught a 5-yard TD pass from Nelson to cut the lead to 26-12 with 8:24  to go.

Mundt hit paydirt for the 4th and final time with 5:27 to go in the game on a 35-yard scamper to make it 33-12.

Hayfield would get one more TD with under a minute to go in the game, when Patrick Towey hauled in a 6-yard TD pass from Nelson, to set the final score at 33-18.
