Bulldogs Hold Off Tigers In Regular Season Finale
It seems like the best was saved for last. The 2019 Regular Season of Football Night on HBC wrapped up in Elgin with a 42-29 PEM win over Lake City.
The tone was set early when the Bulldogs scored a TD on their first offensive possession of the game. Quarterback Kaden Lamb scampered in from 15 yards out with 8:49 left in the opening quarter for the early lead. Lamb then found Gage Hansen for the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldogs were on top 8-0.
The Tigers couldn’t convert on their first possession, and were forced to punt. The punt was blocked by the Bulldogs, and recovered by Cael Marx. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs took a 2-score lead when Leo Silha ran in a 7-yard score. The 2-point conversion was no good, and PEM led 14-0.
The Tigers got their offense going next, with a quality drive that ended on the first play of the second quarter. Reid Gastner caught a Justin Wohlers pass for the first Tiger score.
Lake City got the equalizer with 3 and a half minutes to go in the half when Kris Ryan broke loose for a 15 yard score.
It looked like the Tigers had momentum in their favor, but the ensuing kick turned the tide back to the Bulldogs. Blake Herber returned the kick, for decent field position, but a horse collar tackle penalty put the ball in Tiger territory at the 44. On the next play, Lamb and Marx collided on a handoff, putting the ball on the ground. Lamb alertly picked the ball up, and found Carter Meyers for a short pass, then Meyers sprinted downfield to complete a 44-yard score. Silha converted the 2-point try, and PEM took the lead back 22-14.
There was time for one more Tiger possession in the first half, and Lake City took advantage heading downfield. Wohlers spotted Atticus Heise on a 4th down pass with 30 seconds to go, but the pass was a little too high, off his fingertips to squelch the drive.
PEM went for broke on the second half kickoff, trying an onside kick. Mac Heise recovered at midfield to give the Tigers another shot to get back in the game. However, Sam Schultz picked off a Wohlers pass to swing the pendulum back to PEM.
The Bulldogs marched downfield, and Lamb connected with Connor Schumacher for a 23-yard score. Silha again completed the 2-point conversion, and PEM led 30-14. PEM again tried an onside kick, this time with success, as Hansen recovered. The Tiger defense did not allow a score, and Lake City had at least one more shot to get back into the game.
Justin Wohlers found his brother Jake for a 15-yard TD with 3:29 remaining in the third quarter, and the Tigers were back in business, down 30-22.
PEM continued to stay a step ahead of Lake City, closing out the quarter when Lamb tossed his 3rd TD pass of the night, to Schultz, 30 yards downfield to lead 36-22.
Lake City never gave up, scoring early in the 4th quarter when Wohlers hooked up with Carson Matzke for a 23-yard score to pull within 7.
The Bulldogs closed the door on Lamb’s 4th TD toss, 27 yards downfield to Hansen.
