Cardinals Remain Undefeated In Win Over Eagles
The Lewiston-Altura Cardinals kept their unblemished record intact (9-0) holding off a Second Quarter rally, defeating the Dover-Eyota Eagles (0-9) 43-22 in the First Round of the Section 1AA Playoffs.
After holding off the Eagles first offensive possession, Blake Schilling and the Cardinals went to work on their offense. It was a heavy dose of running backs Cole Mundt, Kolton Riser, Ashtyn Christie and Collin Bonow that kept the Eagle defense moving backward. Schilling capped off the first drive with a 6 yard TD run to put the Cardinals up 7-0.
Toward the end of the first quarter, the Cardinals appeared to be headed for a 2-score lead. However, Mundt fumbled, and the Eagles recovered on their own 5-yard line.
46 seconds into the second quarter, Schilling intercepted his counterpart, Brady Williams to get the points that evaded them minutes before.
Mundt hit paydirt with a 30-yard run less than 2 minutes later to put the Cardinals up 14-0.
The Eagles, though, would not go down without a fight. They put together a quick drive, resulting in a Blake Blattner score with 7:01 remaining in the half, down 14-7.
Schilling returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Dover-Eyota 37 yard line, and quickly converted thanks to a Riser 9-yard run, to go up 21-7 with 6:00 left in the quarter.
Williams kept the Eagles in the game with another efficient drive, ending with a 48-yard TD strikc to Jamison Rudlong. The Eagles then converted a 2-point try on a Williams pass to Greg Holst, and trailed 21-15.
That’s when the turning point occurred. The Eagles lined up in a bunch formation, and Williams attempted an onside kick. The kick was in the right place, but Williams dove past the ball, and L-A’s Sam Bronk recovered. The Cardinals turned the great field position into another score when Mundt punched in a 10-yard score, and converted a 2-point try of their own to head into the Half with a 29-15 lead.
The Cardinals received the second half kick, and thanks to a late hit penalty, were in position to put the game away. Mundt scored his third TD of the night on a 7-yard run to expand the lead to 35-15.
Williams had one more drive left in him, leading the Eagles downfield, hooking up again with Rudlong on an 11-yard pass to get to 35-22.
However, the Cardinals had one more scoring drive left as well, and Schilling put the exclamation point on the win, with his second rushing TD of the game to arrive at the 43-22 final score.
The #2 Cardinals move on to play #3 Chatfield (7-2) on Saturday, October 26 at 7pm at Lewiston Auto Field in Lewiston.
