Hbc’s david dicke and matt marek race through the aisles of midtown foods during the 2022 grocery grab event.

Teams of two from each company were given 90-seconds to race through the aisles and fill two carts with as many items as possible, with the team collecting the highest dollar amount of items being declared the winner.

The event, which services as the local kickoff for the Minnesota March FoodShare Campaign, collected a total of 1,407 pounds of food and personal care items to help restock the WVS Food Shelf. According to Winona Volunteer Services Executive Director, Sandra Burke, an average of 466 households were served by the food shelf each month last year with almost 427,000 pounds of food distributed. Burke said she is seeing a rise in food shelf use in 2022 with an average of 500 households seeking help with food.

Persons wishing to donate to help keep the shelves full can make a monetary donation through winonavs.org or by bringing non-perishable food items directly to Winona Volunteer Services located at 402 East 2nd Street in Winona, MN.
