PBX Voicemail System Security Best Practices
A PBX or phone system with voicemail may be open to attack by hackers. This can result in an unwelcome phone bill as a result of hackers accessing phone lines to place costly international or Caribbean calls on pirated lines.
The following are measures you can take to protect your phone system from such intrusions and to prevent unexpected bills include the following:
- Password Protection: The first and easiest step is to make certain you have secured your PBX with password protection. If you are uncertain whether you have that, please contact your PBX vendor. System passwords should never be simple or left with default admin user and password settings.
- Physical Security: PBX hardware/servers should be located in a physically secure location with access limited to appropriate staff. Consider restricted calling access for phones placed in public areas.
- Block International and Caribbean Calls: You will be most fully protected from costly phone fraud if you block all outbound international and Caribbean calls through your PBX. Your PBX vendor can arrange that, or HBC could help you do it. HBC blocks international and Caribbean calling unless removal is requested in writing by the customer.
- Know Your Exposure: It is important to be aware that if you choose not to block outbound international and Caribbean calls through your PBX that you are responsible for any charges for those calls.
